Mehr als nur ein Spiel – More than just a game

In Germany, football has a tradition that goes back over a hundred years. As early as the 1920s, the games became a spectator magnet. There used to be a wide variety of clubs and competitions. The Nazis crushed this tradition in 1933. They outlawed many clubs and excluded members and fans from football. By means of “Gleichschaltung”, the now “coordinated” clubs were supposed to demonstrate the “Community of the German People”.
During the EURO 2024, an exhibition on football under National Socialism will show how football had to subordinate itself to the politics and ideology of National Socialism.

The “Football and Remembrance” project on the occasion of EURO24
On the occasion of EURO24, many guests from Germany and abroad will also visit the venues outside the match days. These guests are looking for additional cultural experiences. The Cultural Foundation of the German Football Association (DFB) has developed a profile in which dealing with the history of National Socialism is a high priority. Based on this, it aims to create an additional offer as part of the EURO24 cultural programme. The idea is to offer a local place of remembrance or a regional memorial at all European Championship venues and in their surrounding areas. In this way, visibility is created for the remembrance of National Socialism during the European Championships.

Le football en Allemagne a une tradition plus que centenaire. Dès les années 1920, les matchs étaient devenus un pôle d’attraction pour les spectateurs. Il y avait une grande diversité de clubs et de compétitions. Les nationaux-socialistes ont mis fin à cette tradition à partir de 1933. Ils ont interdit de nombreux clubs et exclu des membres et des supporters de football. La « Volksgemeinschaft » allemande était censée se manifester dans des asso-ciations « mises au pas ».
L’exposition sur le football sous le national-socialisme aura lieu pendant l’EURO 2024 et montrera comment le football a dû se soumettre à la politique et à l’idéologie du national-socialisme.

À l’occasion de l’EURO24, de nombreux hôtes allemands et étrangers se rendront sur les lieux des matchs, même en dehors des jours de compétition. Ces personnes seront à la recherche d’autres offres culturelles. La Fondation culturelle de la DFB s’est forgé un profil dans lequel l’étude de l’histoire du national-socialisme occupe une place importante. Elle souhaite en faire découler une offre dans le cadre du programme culturel de l’EURO24. L’idée est de proposer dans tous les lieux de rencontre du championnat d’Europe et dans leurs environs un lieu de mémoire local ou un site commémoratif régional. Cette démarche permet de créer de la visibilité pendant le championnat d’Europe et de rappeler l’époque nazie.
